Château Mazeyres – Le Seuil de Mazeyres Pomerol 2019 (750ml)
Château Mazeyres is an historic estate in Pomerol; the site of the château was where the Roman poet Ausonius chose to build his villa, Lucaniac, thousands of years ago and vineyards have been planted since at least the 14th century. Alain Moueix and his team have farmed Mazeyres biodynamically since 2011, with organic certification in 2015, followed by biodynamic certification in 2018. Today, the estate totals 25.5 hectares of certified biodynamic vineyards on terraces by the Catusseau plateau in the southwest of Pomerol on a mix of fine clay gravel soils; clay sand and gravel soils; and sandy clay soils, each of which imbue the wine with specific characteristics that add to the final blend.
Le Seuil de Mazeyres, the second label of Château Mazeyres, is a blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc aged in a mix of 30% oak barrels and 70% concrete and steel vats. In the glass, the wine shows a brilliant deep purple color with soaring aromas of blackberries, cassis, sweet spice and ripe strawberry. On the palate, the wine is soft and smooth with velvet tannins and rich, concentrated fruit flavors that flow into a powerful, refined finish. It is fascinating to see the interplay of Mazeyres’ terroirs in action: elegance from the fine clay gravel soils; flesh, roundness and density from clay sand soils; power from the gravel and sandy soils. Drink now or put a few bottles away to enjoy over the next 5+ years.
93 points, Vinous
The 2019 Mazeyres is bright, effusive and so inviting. Blood orange, mint, rose petal, white pepper, espresso and incense are some of the many notes that soar from the glass. Mazeyres is not a big or obvious wine. Instead, it is a Pomerol that is all about understatement and class. As always, the Cabernet Franc is a strong marker. – Antonio Galloni
93 points, Vinous again!
The 2019 Mazeyres has a really lovely, understated bouquet for the vintage, blackberry, warm gravel and light loamy scents gradually unfurling. The palate is medium-bodied and fresh on the entry, with fine-grained tannins, well-judged acidity, and discreet hints of truffle and dark chocolate lending complexity on the finish. This is a classy, very appealing Pomerol that will give 15–20 years of pleasure. – Neal Martin
